Description of organisation

The City Youth Council of Würzburg is the umbrella organisation for all youth groups in Würzburg and the politically recognized representative of the interests of children and youth in the city. As a part of the Bavarian Youth Council, we are a public body with an elected, voluntary executive committee. Our headquarters is located in the city centre. We are advocates for the needs and interests of all young people in the city of Würzburg, are responsible for responding to any questions pertaining to youthwork, and together with our 42 member groups offer a plethora of programs and services for children and youth in the city. Our work is rooted in the principles of the federal constitution, Book VIII of the Social Law Code, and Article 32 of the Regulatory Statute for the Social Code of Bavaria. Our goal is to encourage and support youth work in the city of Würzburg. Youthwork offers children and youth the opportunity for unconstrained development, creates a space in which to experiment and gain experience, where young people can probe their skills and limits, in addition to enabling them to learn how to independantly organize their free time.

PROJECT ENVIRONMENT:

The City Youth Council is located in the city of Würzburg. The urban district of Würzburg is a regional center in Bavaria with a population of 130,000. Würzburg has little industry, but supports a large number of educational institutions and boasts a high university student population as well as a number of large clinics. This means there are many possibilities for young people to go out, but there are relatively few families with children.

PROPOSED ACTIVITIES FOR EVS VOLUNTEERS:

Volunteers are a part of our team. They are integrated in the preparation of, execution of and reflection on programs and initiatives in which the City Youth Council is involved. This includes:
– educational work in the area of intercultural openness in youth work and schools,
– participation in activities offered by member organisations of the City Youth Council,
– work in Summer Camps organised by member groups of the Regional Youth Council of Würzburg during school summer holidays
– support at our children’s film events
– initiating contact to partner cities; preparation, participation and assistance during international exchanges with partner cities
– preparation and assistance during executive committee meetings
– learning the routines and processes of the organisation in order to work independantly
– designing City Youth Council publication and publicity material
– performing office work, such as telephoning and computer work
– acting as office contact for clients
Volunteers will also be given the opportunity of organising a project for the Action Day of Youthwork in Würzburg, and are encouraged to regularly contribute thier own ideas and show initiative.

VOLUNTEER PROFILES AND RECRUITMENT PROCESS:

Volunteers should be interested in working with young people and have a general interest in social work. They should be prepared to work in the evenings and occasionally on weekends, and be open and flexible when dealing with many different types of people.

NUMBER OF VOLUNTEERS HOSTED:

2

Samverket is working both with large number of local Swedish volunteers and international EVS volunteers. In order to ensure a successful integration of EVS volunteers it is seen that two at a time is the best model how hosting organisation works most efficiently. Samverket work mentors take care of volunteers and help them interact and integrate in Swedish community.

RISK PREVENTION, PROTECTION AND SAFETY:

Project volunteers are always working as part of our team, and never without support. We work together with volunteers during regular team meetings and special guidance meetings to plan, evaluate and reflect on their tasks, as well as to answer questions and address any concerns or difficulties at an early stage.
Project volunteers are also involved in a network of EVS volunteers working in or near Würzburg. Coordinators from the supporting organisation offers regular meetings open to all volunteers that help to ensure that any difficulties that may occur during the project, be they pertaining to culture, living conditions, settling in, homesickness or of another nature, can be aired and sorted out quickly.
Structures are in place for dealing with problems or crises, enabling them to be recognized and addressed at an early stage, before they can escalate. Volunteers can reach the supporting organisation coordinator at nearly any time, giving volunteers a point of contact even outside the project, should they feel they are in crisis. If problems arise between volunteers and the project itself, volunteers can seek a dialogue with the supporting organisation to address the matter in a timely fashion.
