Romania -> Cluj-Napoca -> Hosting organization and for a while in all the 8 euro-regions.
is the 2nd largest city in Romania and was the European Youth Capital of 2015. The multicultural city is located in Transylvania and is the home for 324,576 people, without adding it’s 80.000 students.
According to a 2012 research, Cluj-Napoca is the friendliest city for foreign people in Europe and also a city that well integrates the foreign people choosing to live here. Cluj-Napoca is also the most progressive European city.
In Cluj we love the arts! The city is hosting 2 national theatres, the Romanian National Theatre and Opera and The Hungarian National Theatre and Opera, the most important film festival of the country TIFF, Transylvania International Film Festival, the most loved festival –Electric Castle Festival (European Festival Awards finalist for medium sized festivals), the only major size festival in Romania – Untold Festival (1st edition in 2015 as the European Youth Capital), a loved cultural brand – Jazz in the Park festival (free entrance). TIMAF is one of the most important indoor festivals with events all the year. The city has even more festivals that you need to attend, as an EVS or as a tourist. Cluj deserves it all! That’s why the city is a European Capital of Culture finalist for 2021.
If we think at nature, Cluj-Napoca is surrounded by forests and if you want to go in a quiet place the city is located 20-30 minutes away from beautiful mountains. The city benefits by a small sky resort and different fun parks, a beautiful botanical garden, a mystical full of legends forest (Hoia-Baciu forest) and a central park full of people reading or enjoying fresh air in their hammock or having a pick-nickoutside.
In terms of sport the city has different small workout parks with sport fields. There are also places for swimming, basketball, skate parks, football, adventure parks and many others.
The coffee and tea lovers will be happy in Cluj. The city has many great coffee shops and tea houses. Some of the bars and coffee shops are in the international tops, either for the taste, either for the original design of the places.
April the 1st, 2016 – March the 28th, 2017
The Light and Shadow Theatre project
6 volunteers from Italy, Germany and Spain, along with 4 volunteers from Romania will learn how to be a team – a theatre crew. They will learn what is the black light theatre, what is the shadow theatre and how to tell stories with these different theatre techniques. In March the volunteers will participate in a team building and in 2 training courses on the visual theatre topics. Between April and September 2016 the crew will perform, 2 times per month, for almost 200 people/ show, different plays using shadows and lights. Each play will be created by the volunteers and offered for free to the Cluj-Napoca community. In May, June, July and August, between the performances and the rehearsals, the volunteers will become storytellers for 40 children. The stories told each of the mornings will be stories from the country of the volunteers (May – Italy, June – Germany, July – Spain, August – Romania). Also from May to August, the volunteers will teach theatre. The participants in the lessons will be youngsters from Cluj-Napoca. Each group of national volunteers will teach 6-7 youngsters. At the end of the theatre classes, the youngsters will perform a play in a cocktail event. All the activities in the cocktail event will be a cultural learning experience because it will be the chance to get to know the volunteer countries in different ways (theatre, photo voice, film, etc.).In September and October, 3 days per week the volunteers will be on the roads of the rural Romania, showing their performances to children that don’t have the possibility to go to theatre. After each performance, the volunteers will train the educators from each village visited to use the method in school or after school. The volunteers will go in all the 8 euro-regions of Romania, in villages in which the kids have fewer cultural opportunities.Between November 2016 and January 2017, the volunteers will have the chance to implement a personal project – to plan activities in the topic/ field that they are interested in, no matter if it means working with seniors or planting trees. Hosting organization will provide all the support possible for the volunteers to implement their projects. The last month of the service – February 2017 – will be reserved for the reflection of the learning process, for the reports, future plans (based on dreams),
With 4 national volunteers, living in Cluj-Napoca (Ro), aged 18-30 years.4 partners (3 NGO’s and a public institution).
And they will share their gift with the communities they will work on: children, youth, adults and seniors in their performances, with kids in the storytelling mornings and in the performances in the caravan, with youth in the theatre lessons and educators in the caravan and in the one-time-only public rehearsal.
Mainly the project is addressed for people in Cluj-Napoca, but 2 months (September and October) will be dedicated to small communities in rural areas of Romania.
Organization that seeks the innovation, the alternatives and that supports the initiatives, especially those who are sustainable or contributes to the sustainable development of our communities.
Hosting organisation is a small project-based organisation. Up until the December 2015, our team has implemented almost 40 projects in different educational and cultural areas, from trainings and various projects focused on informal education for young people, to long-lasting development educational projects, social-cultural animation projects and art and culture projects. The organization works mainly in Cluj-Napoca but has branches also in Bucharest and Buzau.
We are passionate about what we are doing, we love our work and we invested 7 years of volunteering in implementing our dreams and our vision of a creative and sustainable community. For 2016 we will be honoured if you will choose our organization as well as our country for your European Voluntary Service and for this we say: Mulţumim din suflet! (Thank you from the bottom of our souls!)
Imagine a dark theatre room full of enthusiasm and lights and shadows on the stage – a theatre performance of an international crew of volunteers. Sounds amazing? It will all happen here, in Cluj-Napoca and you can be part of it!
The project “The Light and Shadow Theatre Project” will involve 6 international volunteers from Italy, Spain and Germany and 4 local volunteers from Romania, to create magical performances in theatre combining innovative theatre techniques that will make you to discover (once again) the passion of theatre. Our European Voluntary Service will contribute to deepen the way we communicate. The project will approach the superficial communication that we have these days – on facebook, smart-phone apps, websites or text messages and sometimes face to face. Because we started to forget what is like to meet up with friends and have a coffee without using smartphones or odd words.
But do you think we will have only theatrical performances in this 12 months service? No. There will be numerous events for kids, youth and adults such as: Storytelling morning for kids, where the volunteers will tell a story from their country using different storytelling techniques, or Cocktail evenings, where the volunteers will have the opportunity to present their culture, country. Like this, our community will get to know other cultures as well as our volunteers will get to know more closely the culture of Romania.
One of the most exciting part of our project is Theatre Caravan. The volunteers will travel in rural Romania to perform for children and youth without cultural opportunities. We dream at this road show as we would be stars and we dream at meeting other stars on the road: people with beautiful stories, places with history, places that will host our plays. And because the volunteers are super-heroes they will empower the educators from the visited villages by teaching them different theatre techniques.
After the caravan, in November, the volunteers will have the chance to create their own volunteering project – in any field they want. We will help them in the implementation, no matter if is only 1 volunteer working in that project or all the crew.
We strongly believe that „The Light and Shadow Theatre Project„ will be a life-changing learning opportunity and a good approach to promote meaningful ways of communication. Willing to join the project?
The volunteers will share a home. They will live in 3 beds shared room in a 3 rooms home (1 room for girls, 1 room for boys, 1 shared living room).Facilities:
An EVS experience should provide the volunteers the same conditions as a normal family in Cluj-Napoca. So don’t worry about having a washing machine, a Romanian phone and phone number with rechargeable credit (monthly), good Internet connection and a TV. All the home expenses are assured by the hosting organization.Budget:
Each volunteer will receive 60 euro as pocket money (fixed amount from the Programme) and a fixed food allowance that will cover all the food expenses for a month.Prices in Romania:
Romania does not have euro. We have leu. One euro is 4.5 lei.
Generally speaking Europeans consider Romania a country with small/ cheap prices. A 2l Coca Cola costs 5 lei. A bread costs 3-5 lei. A beer costs 2-7 lei. A kilo of apples costs 2 lei. Going out in a bar may cost you either 5-10 lei, either 50 lei. There are places and prices for everyone.Working places:
The volunteers will work in 2 places:
- the office (office activities, planning performances, theatre classes, rehearsals, preparation of costumes and materials, mentorship session, language classes, etc.);
- the theatre (rehearsals and performances)
In the Caravan, the volunteers will work in schools.
The language of the project is English.
The national language is Romanian but most of the Romanians will not have a problem with understanding English.
To make your living even more relevant, you have the possibility to learn Romanian so you will be able to communicate better outside of the project (or in the project when you work with small children).
The EVS volunteers will work 6 hours/ day, 5 days/ week.
Each week the volunteers will have 2 free days (week-ends or week days – depending on the performances).
The volunteers also have 2 other free days/ month.
Each volunteer will benefit by a EVS medical Insurance valid in Romania and in any other country of the world, on all the duration of the service (plus 2 months more, after the service).
All the volunteers will work on a learning plan or a personal development plan and will be supported in developing the skills, knowledge or attitudes needed by the volunteers for the project and for their career after the EVS project.
EVS Resource persons:
The volunteers will benefit of the support of a mentor that will have the role of helping the volunteer to adapt to the project, to integrate in the local community, to learn how to learn and to learn how to live and work in an international environment.
The language teacher is also a resource person. The teacher will contribute to the language learning but also to the Romanian culture understanding.
All the volunteers will obtain the YouthPass certificate at the end of the project (or earlier if needed).
YouthPass is a Europe-wide validation instrument for non-formal learning in the youth field
